The American Shorthair is ranked 8th most popular cat breed by American Cat Fanciers Association. Once called the Domestic Shorthair, this breed originated in Britain. Their journey to North America was by boat. The American Shorthair became known as the "working cat" because of their excellent hunting skills. Many American Shorthair cats were brought aboard the boats to protect the crew's food and storage supplies from being eaten and damaged by mice.
American Shorthair cat breeds are generally low maintenance and healthy. Their body structure is muscular and powerful. They require a lot of exercise, making them perfect pets for families with children. American Shorthair cats are worker cats's, their fur is thick,dense and stiff. The strong plush coat acts as protection for the cat's body. Dense coats protect them from cuts and scratches,as well as the outdoor elements like extreme cold. Due to the thickness of the fur, American Shorthair cats and kittens can over heat.
Long on life, the American Shorthair cat breed can live between 15 to 20 years. Adult males usually weight about fifteen pounds. There is a predisposition for this breed of cat to become over weight if not monitored. The American Shorthair is recognized as a pedigreed cat by cat associations.
